LASIK CONSULTATION

What is LASIK?

LASIK surgery is a painless laser procedure performed using only eye drops for anesthesia to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. A flap is made in the cornea with a blade called a microkeratome. Next, a beam of light from an excimer laser reshapes the cornea. In the final step, the corneal flap is replaced. The corneal flap services as a bandage after the surgery and allows the eye to heal quickly and with no pain. The entire procedure takes less than 15 minutes and visual improvements are usually seen within 24 hours. Patients are usually able to return to work and most normal activities within 2 days.

During your comprehensive eye examination, our doctors can determine if you are a candidate for refractive surgery. They will discuss your options with you and refer you if you would like to proceed. We co-manage with refractive surgeons so that your pre and post operative care can be done in our office.

Am I a good candidate?

A screening with one of our doctors is the best way to determine if you are a candidate and what your probable outcome may be.

Good candidates are at least 18 years of age, in good general health, and with no eye diseases such as cataracts, glaucoma, keratoconus, and certain retinal or optic nerve diseases. Candidates should be free of certain eye viruses including herpes simplex and herpes zoster. Good candidates should also be free of certain health problems including uncontrolled diabetes, autoimmune or collagen vascular disease, and any medication or condition which renders the patient immunocompromised. Patients must have an adequate corneal thickness to proceed with this surgery.

Other conditions that should be relayed to the doctor include keloid scarring with previous surgical healing, back problems, claustrophobia or other psychological problems, which may affect the surgery or recovery.

It is critical that a potential laser vision correction candidate has obtained a stable prescription for at least one year. Since hormones may affect the stability of your prescription, pregnant or nursing women are not eligible to pursue laser vision correction until two menstrual cycles after nursing has been discontinued. This is to make sure that the best results are achieved with the surgery, and to try to limit fluctuations in prescription that can occur with hormonal shifts.

What is glaucoma?

Glaucoma is damage to the nerve that connects your eye to your brain. It causes side vision loss and can lead to blindness. Most often, it occurs gradually and without any symptoms.

Unfortunately, this damage is not reversible. Early detection and treatment is essential to minimize vision loss.
